What Is a Postgraduate Degree?
A postgraduate degree is an advanced academic qualification normally pursued after completing a bachelor’s degree.
At the undergraduate level, students generally build foundational and intermediate knowledge in their chosen field.
A postgraduate program usually goes further.
Depending on the discipline, students may encounter:
- advanced theory;
- specialized subjects;
- research methods;
- laboratory work;
- case studies;
- projects;
- internships;
- dissertations;
- industry applications.
The structure varies significantly between disciplines.
For example, an MA in Political Science is fundamentally different from an MBA, MSc in Physics or MTech in Computer Science.
Students should therefore evaluate the specific postgraduate program, not postgraduate education as a single category.
How Many Students Pursue Postgraduate Education in India?
The latest official AISHE 2023–24 report gives useful context.

| Others | 8.6% |
Eligibility for Postgraduate Degree Programs
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification is generally the starting point for postgraduate admission.
But this does not mean every bachelor’s graduate is eligible for every master’s program.
Eligibility may depend on:
- undergraduate degree;
- major/discipline;
- subjects studied;
- minimum marks or CGPA;
- entrance examination;
- work experience;
- portfolio;
- interview;
- institution-specific requirements;
- regulatory requirements.
For example, an MSc may require relevant science study, while an MTech normally requires an appropriate technical background.
An MBA may permit graduates from a wider range of academic backgrounds, but admission requirements vary by institution.
Therefore, GK360 should never state:
“Every PG course requires 50% in graduation.”
Instead write:
“Eligibility varies by program and institution. Check the current official admission prospectus before applying.”
How Long Is a Postgraduate Degree?
A postgraduate degree is not universally two years.
India’s National Credit Framework describes different postgraduate pathways.
For a student entering after a three-year bachelor’s degree, the framework maps a two-year master’s programme with a minimum of 80 credits.
For someone entering after a four-year bachelor’s degree with Honours/Honours with Research, it maps a one-year master’s programme with a minimum of 40 credits.
The framework also describes a PG Diploma exit after the first year of an applicable two-year PG programme.
So the best GK360 wording is:
Postgraduate degree duration is commonly 1–2 years under applicable frameworks, although professional and specialized programmes may follow different structures.
Students must check the actual university programme.
1-Year vs 2-Year Master’s Degree
This distinction is becoming increasingly important.
Two-Year Master’s
A two-year master’s pathway can follow a three-year undergraduate degree under the National Credit Framework.
One-Year Master’s
A one-year master’s pathway is mapped for students with an appropriate four-year bachelor’s degree, such as Honours/Honours with Research, under the framework.
However, this does not mean every university currently offers every master’s subject in both formats.
Implementation, programme structure and admission requirements should always be checked with the university.
Admission Through CUET-PG
CUET-PG is an important postgraduate entrance route in India.
The 2026 CUET-PG examination has already been conducted, and NTA’s current portal lists the declaration of the 2026 result and scorecard availability.
The examination was conducted across multiple dates in March 2026.
CUET-PG participating institutions for 2026 are organized by NTA into:
- Central Universities;
- State Universities;
- Government/Fully Funded Institutions;
- Deemed Universities;
- Private Universities.
For current information, students should use the official:
But CUET-PG is not the only PG admission route in India.
Different institutions and programs may use their own entrance tests, national examinations, merit-based admissions, interviews or other processes.
How to Choose a Postgraduate Degree
1. Decide Why You Need It
Before choosing a master’s program, ask:
Do I need specialization?
Is the qualification required for my intended profession?
Am I preparing for research?
Do I want to change fields?
Am I pursuing it mainly for career advancement?
A clear goal makes comparison much easier.
2. Check Eligibility First
Don’t spend weeks researching a program before confirming that your bachelor’s degree satisfies its eligibility requirements.
3. Compare the Curriculum
Never choose only from the degree name.
Open the university’s semester-wise syllabus.
Compare:
- core subjects;
- electives;
- research components;
- projects;
- laboratory work;
- internships;
- dissertation requirements.
4. Check the Institution
Verify the university’s status through appropriate official sources.
For general higher-education regulatory information, use:
5. Calculate the Full Cost
Tuition is only one component.
Also consider:
- admission fees;
- examination fees;
- hostel;
- rent;
- transportation;
- books;
- laptop/software;
- laboratory costs;
- relocation;
- opportunity cost.
6. Examine Career Relevance
Ask what the master’s qualification actually enables you to do.
Don’t assume “higher degree = automatically higher salary.”
7. Investigate Research Opportunities
Students considering a future PhD should examine:
- faculty research interests;
- dissertation options;
- laboratories;
- research centres;
- publications;
- methodology training.
Postgraduate Degree vs Postgraduate Diploma
These qualifications should not be treated as identical.
| Factor | Master’s Degree | PG Diploma |
|---|---|---|
| Qualification | Postgraduate degree | Postgraduate diploma |
| Duration | Often 1–2 years depending on pathway | Often shorter, but varies |
| Academic depth | Usually broader/deeper | Often more focused |
| Research component | May be significant | Depends on programme |
| PhD pathway | Can be relevant | Depends on applicable eligibility rules |
| Career use | Academic/professional | Often specialization/skill-focused |
| Best choice | Goal-dependent | Goal-dependent |
Students should choose based on what qualification is required for their next step.
Regular vs Distance vs Online Postgraduate Programs
Postgraduate education can be delivered through different modes where permitted.
AISHE 2023–24 reported 44.0 lakh total students in distance mode across levels, including 21.1 lakh female and 22.9 lakh male students. Its programme data shows substantial distance-mode enrolment in MA, MBA, MCom and MSc.
For 2023–24, distance-mode enrolment in selected PG programmes included:
| Programme | Distance-mode enrolment |
|---|---|
| MA | 8,32,632 |
| MBA | 2,10,701 |
| MSc | 1,19,224 |
| MCom | 1,05,422 |
However, not every postgraduate program is permitted online or through distance learning.
UGC regulations restrict several professional and regulated disciplines from ODL/online delivery unless permitted under the applicable framework.
Before enrolling, students should verify the current institution and programme status.
Growth of Major PG Programs
AISHE provides an interesting five-year comparison for regular-mode postgraduate education.
MA
Regular MA enrolment increased from:
9,45,895 in 2019–20
to:
12,54,230 in 2023–24
—a reported increase of approximately 32.6%.
MSc
Regular MSc enrolment increased from:
6,75,217
to:
8,61,950
—a 27.7% increase.
MBA
Regular MBA enrolment increased from:
4,54,459
to:
6,31,887
—a 39.0% increase.
These figures describe enrolment trends. They do not prove that one degree has better employment prospects than another.
What Can You Do After a Postgraduate Degree?
Enter or Advance in Employment
A master’s degree can provide deeper subject knowledge relevant to professional roles.
But employment depends on the field, skills, experience, institution and labour market.
Pursue a PhD
Research-oriented students may progress toward doctoral study where they meet the applicable eligibility and admission requirements.
AISHE 2023–24 recorded 3,43,559 PhD enrolments nationally.
Prepare for Competitive Examinations
Some graduates use postgraduate study alongside preparation for government, academic or professional examinations.
Each examination has separate eligibility rules.
Move Toward Teaching and Academia
A master’s degree can form part of an academic pathway, but becoming eligible for particular teaching posts can involve additional qualifications and applicable UGC or regulatory requirements.
Build Specialized Expertise
A master’s program can allow deeper specialization than a broad undergraduate degree.
Entrepreneurship
Advanced knowledge in management, technology, science, commerce and other fields can also support entrepreneurship, although a master’s degree is not a prerequisite for starting a business.
Is a Master’s Degree Worth It?
There is no universal answer.
A postgraduate degree can make sense when:
- the intended profession requires it;
- you want deeper specialization;
- you need it for further academic progression;
- the program provides valuable technical/research skills;
- the cost is reasonable relative to your goals.
It may make less sense if someone chooses a degree only because they do not know what else to do after graduation.
Evaluate:
Goal + Institution + Curriculum + Cost + Skills + Career relevance
together.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Don’t choose a master’s degree only because it is popular.
Don’t assume every master’s program takes exactly two years.
Don’t assume every graduate is eligible for every PG program.
Don’t choose an MBA solely from advertised placement numbers.
Don’t confuse a PG diploma with a master’s degree.
Don’t assume an online master’s is automatically recognized without checking the applicable status.
Don’t rely on old entrance-exam dates.
Don’t choose a university without checking the actual syllabus.
Don’t take a large education loan without calculating the total cost.
And don’t assume a postgraduate degree guarantees employment or a specific salary.
