Tips and Tricks for Blocked Drains

If you’re dealing with a blocked drain, don’t panic – there are plenty of things that you can do to try and clear it up yourself. Today, we want to discuss some tips and tricks for clearing blocked drains. Let’s get started!

Try a Plunger – Plungers are easy to use and work surprisingly well, especially when the blockage is relatively close to the surface of your drain. To use a plunger, partially fill your sink or tub with water. Then, place the plunger over the drain and pump until you feel a suction developing. Lift the plunger quickly and watch for a rush of air as the blockage is freed. When a plunger works, it can be a quick and easy fix for a blocked drain (and incredibly rewarding!).

Use Boiling Water – If a plunger doesn’t do the trick, you can try boiling water. Boiling water is often an effective way to clear out clogs that are backed up in your pipes and can help dissolve any excess grease and grime that may be in your drains. Pour boiling water slowly down the drain, being careful to avoid any splashing.

Invest in a Drain Snake – If boiling water and plungers aren’t doing the trick, you may want to invest in a drain snake. Refrain from using chemical cleaners for blocked drains initially and instead opt for a drain snake. To use a drain snake, insert the end of the tool into your sink or shower drain, with the coil portion inside of the drain. Move the snake around in a circular motion, while pushing it down deeper into the drain. This should help clear out any clogs that are causing your drain to become blocked.

Use Baking Soda and Vinegar – If you don’t want to purchase a drain snake, you can opt for the more traditional method of using baking soda and vinegar. Start by pouring a generous amount of baking soda down your drain. Then, mix one part vinegar with three parts hot water and pour that down the drain. This action will cause a bubbling reaction which could help to break apart the clog. Keep it in for about 15 minutes and then run hot water down the drain to flush it out.

Try a Chemical Cleaner – If all else fails, you can try a chemical cleaner. These are usually effective in breaking apart clogs and removing debris from the drain pipes. However, it is important to read and follow the directions of any chemical cleaner carefully. Be aware that these can be toxic and should not be used in drains with standing water.
